Information Technology and Environmental Management Group

The Group work in the area of environmental science and computer science, including the development of methods for the creation, transmission, storage, processing, modeling, interpretation, presentation and dissemination of data and information. New effective techniques of the data processing and managing are developed. This is necessary for environmental studies and public opinion, in order to better understand the changes occurring in the environment, and the consequences of these changes for ecosystems and human health.

We observe more and more severe restrictions related to the management of environmental resources that affect business processes. Latterly, the role of the managerial approach to environmental protection significantly increased. The Group develops three main areas of environmental management:

  1. Environmental management in the process of infrastructure development, including the preparation of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of policies, plans and programs and as well Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of specific projects. The particular interest of the Group concerns the nature of social conflicts related to the development of the infrastructure. Hence, the Group is designing and carrying out programs of public consultation procedures accompanying the preparation stage of the investment. The Group develops and apply modern methods of multi-criteria analysis, optimization and multi-criteria decision support systems for solving environmental problems in the preparation and implementation of investment.
  2. The creation, organization and implementation of strategies for sustainable development of cities, municipalities, counties and regions with a special focus on the optimal planning and management of environmentally valuable areas. The Group develops the basics of modern urban waste management and sustainable urban public transport systems. Additionally, methods of protection of inhabitants from the effects of noise, vibration, electromagnetic radiation and other burden are also developed.
  3. Environmental management in industrial activity, including the impact of using the rational management of energy, water and raw materials, waste management and emission control in production on the competitiveness of the product on the market. Environmental management systems in the enterprise, the use of ecological instruments in the promotion of environmental organizations and enterprises (eco-labeling, eco-design, Cleaner Production), and the methods of Life Cycle Assessment.
